Group Interview Tips: Do’s and Don’ts

Group interviews are useful for comparing candidates, seeing how they work in a team, and observing their performance under pressure. If you're new to them, it might feel intimidating to stand out. However, with the right mindset, group interviews can highlight the skills needed for the job. Here's a list of things to do and avoid in a group interview.

Group Interview Do’s:

• Arrive Early: Arriving early gives you time to make a positive impression and interact informally with other candidates. Avoid arriving too early, as it might be counterproductive.

• Prepare for the Icebreaker: Have a prepared, engaging self-introduction ready to avoid appearing uninteresting or unprepared. A strong introduction sets a positive tone for the interview.

• Sit Up Straight: Maintain confident and attentive body language to demonstrate engagement and interest. Good posture reflects positively on your attentiveness and enthusiasm.

Group Interview Don’ts:  

• Talk over people: Avoid increasing your volume to be heard; it undermines teamwork. The wisest make their voices heard without being loud. Always think before you speak.

• Get lost in the group: Don't let dominant voices intimidate you. Use them to your advantage by offering your own opinion and opening up the discussion. Remember, strong voices face resistance.

• Become too informal: Maintain interview etiquette. It's fine to appear comfortable but don't abandon manners. Taking off outerwear is acceptable, but keep decorum throughout the process.
